Crops soon will be able to provide information about when they need water and how much they need by the invention of the University of Colorado.
The technology includes a small sensor that can be docked to the plants. It sets out the moisture. Data from the leaves can be sent wirelessly to computers, witch are linked to an irrigation equipment.
This is a device that will allow plants to talk to people for their needs, so we will know when to apply fertilizers and water.
Tiny sensor consist an integrated chip which collects and stores information that can be transmitted wirelessly to computers, said the inventor.
This new system can say to farmers exactly when the water absorption capacity is at its maximum, which could reduce the number of watering days for certain crops in a couple of days each week.
The scientists are experimenting with cowpea, and legume, but they believe that the new leaf-sensor invention can be transferred to other crops, including potatoes, sugar beets, pinto beans, wheat, and maize. In the future this invention may be used in large cities to monitoring the urban grass like city parks, said Stoner.
"This device will save much money of the farmers" said Seelig.
