In severe epileptic seizures, excited brain cells fire in pace, which raises the temperature of the brain in this area. This leads more nerves to fire in mechanism for feedback, which makes worse episodes. One way to prevent the escalation of seizures of this kind is to cool the area of the brain that is susceptible.
Therefore, Takashi Saito and colleagues from the University of Yamaguchi in Japan has invented a heat pipe, which is surgically implanted in the affected area of the brain and then binds to a heat sink on the outside of the skull. This device takes the heat off the affected area as it cool and reduces the likelihood of severe epileptic seizures in the future....
